RG mallards work fine, and if you can find some Outlaw duck silo's on E-bay, those are great also. Most water dekes can do fine if the field is rough, or there is loose cover. I assume since you are also talking about layout boat hunting, you have water dekes. Get some silos to give so height to the set, and fill in with the water dekes.

Hey bud. I hunted water and fields last year. We did use the full body but also they make a shell style mallard decoy. I believe G&H makes them.If you shop around a little i'm sure you will be able to find one. What worked the best for us was using a Luck Duck connected to the Vortex Spinning Wing setup.

You will find both on the Cabelas web site under Duck Decoys and Decoy Acc.

Hope this helps.

This is just an idea but worth a try. Buy a bunch of the avery water mallards. Take the keel off. Get some 1/4 steel rod and cut into 8 inch pieces. Weld a metal washer to the top of the rod flush that is the same size as the channel for the keel. That way you can get the decoy to stand straight and make it stand out more.
